XP and Adobe 6.x Problem Resolution

 The Problem
It has been brought to our attention that users of this system who use Microsoft Windows XP as an Operating System together with the latest major release of Adobe Reader (version 6.x) are having trouble viewing our pdf documents.

Symptoms are the inability to display the document in either a browser or an Adobe Reader window by clicking on the given link.

 The Solution
Adobe has now released version 7 of their Adobe Reader product.

We have verified that this update solves the problem with viewing our files in the browser. In fact, this new version also loads much faster.

We still recommend that you un-install the Adobe 6.0 Reader. The instructions are listed below.

Please use the link below and go to the Adobe website to get this new version.

Link to Adobe Acrobat Reader

 Steps for Un-Installing Adobe 6.x
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click the Control Panel menu item.
  3. Click on the Add or Remove Programs applet
  4. Make sure that the 'Change or Remove Programs' Tab is selected in the left hand pane.
  5. Select 'Adobe Acrobat 6.x'.
  6. Click Remove, then click Next to un-install Adobe Acrobat 6.x
  7. Click Finish when complete.
 Log Image Viewer Resolution

 The Problem
When users click on the link to a Log file, which is in .tif format instead of .pdf, their browser may not display the file after downloading it.

In a system with Microsoft Office installed it should display in Microsoft Imaging, otherwise if there is a plug-in for the mime type image/tiff it will use that software instead.

 The Solution
What is needed is a TIF File Viewer that plugs-in to the browser and which recognizes the current version of .tif file formats.

We have found a viewer called AlternaTiff from Medical Informatics Engineering.

Please follow the link to their website and choose the correct install method for your system.

Note that this software is free for any purpose.
